Trotsky and Frida

by Leonard Koel

Trotsky and Frida is a two act play produced in October and November,2015. It was staged by Camino Real Production at the North Fourth Art Center in Albuquerque, NM . The four play characters are Frida Kahlo, Leon Trotsky, Diego Rivera, and Natalya Sedov (Trotsky’s wife.) The play, Trotsky and Frida, takes place in the year 1937 when Leon Trotsky, forced into exile by Joseph Stalin, was granted refuge in Mexico City. World-acclaimed muralist, Diego Rivera, and his artist wife, Frida Kahlo, identified with Trotsky’s anti-Stalinist views. They invited Trotsky and his wife, Natalya, to live in their home. Much is known about the open marriage of Frida and Diego. Fueled by volatile tempers and countless infidelities, their union was notoriously tumultuous. In addition, Frida had affairs with other women as well as men. But little is known about the details of Frida's affair with Trotsky. The play focuses on Trotsky and Frida's relationship. Both are larger than life characters. The love affair between two such powerful and contrasting personalities challenges one's imagination. The affair was short, but long enough to greatly impact their lives and the lives of those around them.”
