Lift

by Edward deBuvitz

“A young man in his early twenties and a slightly older woman meet in a cemetery. The woman is making an attempt to recapture her mother’s pet parakeet which she had accidentally let out of the house. The young man is running away from home after being told by his father he was going to be sent to live on his uncle’s farm. These two have similar histories. Both have been ostracized by their families; the woman because of an incident involving her relationship with her high school teacher resulting in her attempt to set the school on fire, and his shame at being involved in the death of his younger brother Danny. He visits Danny’s grave to bring him toy dinosaurs and the meeting between the two takes place on one of these visits. It is during the course of their interaction that their past is revealed and her plan for the future is formed; a plan which is destined for failure when two thugs attack the man and steal all of his belongings. “

“Gays in the military becomes a very personal topic as Tamera deals with the pending arrival of the conservative Kansas parents of her lover, Lieutenant Commander Rhonda Thompson. Rhonda is absent, called away to temporary duty. It’s all fun and games as Tamera jokes of the situation with her best friend, Tony, until the phone rings. The caller, asks for Rhonda’s ‘next of kin,’ but refuses to provide information to anyone who is not family. The arrival of Martha and Bob Thompson takes on a new urgency as they all await a promised call, one that can only be made to Rhonda’s ‘real’ family.”
